Well friends, the days of Google searching and reading endless blogs for the solutions to your Excel drama are officially in the past. Now we can just ask artificial intelligence!! Meet ChatGPT: an AI-powered chatbot that can answer all of our spreadsheet questions.
Check out the gif above for a quick example. Let’s say we want to write an Excel formula that looks up which customer corresponds with the customer ID “23898,” but we have no idea what function we need to use to achieve this. All we’d need to do is open ChatGPT in our browser and enter a prompt that describes what we want to calculate. Let’s try “write an Excel formula that looks up a value in Cell I2 and returns the corresponding value in the second column” and see what happens!!
Right away, ChatGPT tells us we can use VLOOKUP and writes the formula for us. It even explains all of the components of the formula so we can learn along the way! Now we just copy the formula by clicking on the “Copy code” command, navigate back to our workbook, and paste into our formula bar. Et voilà!
That’s not all ChatGPT can do. Not even close. ChatGPT can also handle analyzing and visualizing data, writing VBA code, writing Python in Excel code - the list is endless. AI chatbots like ChatGPT have literally changed the Excel world forever!! I can’t even imagine if I’d had these tools when I was struggling as a brand new analyst!!
