Stay current on currency

When working with international clients, pulling up the latest currency exchange rates can be a real peso in the ruble. But you Google Sheets users out there can tap the GOOGLEFINANCE function to pull up real-time currency conversion rates from Google’s financial data right into your spreadsheet.

To convert your data between currencies using GOOGLEFINANCE, follow these two steps. First, use the GOOGLEFINANCE function to pull the currency conversion. Next, use the conversion rate to calculate the price in the new currency.

Follow this syntax:

=GOOGLEFINANCE(“currency:”)

Where:

  • Source_currency_symbol is the three-letter code for the currency your data is currently in.
  • Target_currency_symbol is the three-letter code for the currency you want to convert your data to.

In the above example, I converted the prices listed in Euros to US dollars. First, I used the GOOGLEFINANCE function to pull the Euro to US dollar conversion rate by entering EUR (the three-letter currency code for Euros) as source_currency_symbol and USD (the three-letter currency code for dollars) as target_currency_symbol. Then I multiplied each price in column B by the conversion rate to get the price in US dollars. If you try this one at home, don’t forget to lock the conversion rate in your formula by hitting F4, as seen in the example above!
